Dietary

Penguins eat krill (a shrimp-like crustacean in the Family Euphausiidae), squids, and fishes. Various species of penguins have slightly different food preferences, which reduce competition among species.

Here at the Greensboro Science Center, we offer our penguins 2 meals a day, sometimes they show up to both meals and eat, sometimes they only show up to one, and sometimes they don't show up to any.

On average, these guys eat somewhere between one to 2 pounds of fish a day. Now when they are going through the molt process, they need to gain a lot of weight because they're going to be out of the water for a long period of time. So they kind of put on a lot of weight and they can eat up to three to four pounds of fish a day." Murray said eating that much food is impressive because penguins only weigh seven to eight pounds.
